What does a small business accountant cost — and what do you actually get?

It's the question I get asked more than any other: how much does an accountant cost for a small business? The honest answer is that it depends — but not as much as you might think. After more than twenty years working with sole traders and small companies across Baildon, Shipley, Bradford, Leeds and beyond, I can give you a clear sense of what to expect and what those fees actually cover.

For a straightforward sole trader with clean records and a single income stream, you're typically looking at a modest annual fee that covers your self-assessment tax return, basic advice and a year-end review. If you add VAT, payroll, or regular management reporting, the scope grows — and so does the value you receive.

Most accountants now work on a fixed monthly fee rather than billing by the hour. That helps with your cashflow and means you're not watching the clock every time you pick up the phone. At Hermit, we agree a clear scope up front so there are no surprises — and no invoice shock in January.

What are you actually paying for? It's more than a tax return. You're paying for someone to spot deductions you'd miss, to keep you on the right side of HMRC, to warn you before a cashflow crunch hits, and to explain your numbers in plain English rather than accounting jargon. You're also buying back your evenings — because bookkeeping and tax returns at midnight are nobody's idea of fun.

There's always someone who'll do it cheaper. But as the old saying goes, ten pence for turning the screw and the rest for knowing which one to turn. An experienced accountant pays for themselves many times over — not just in tax saved, but in the peace of mind that comes from knowing everything is handled correctly and on time.

If you're a small business owner in Yorkshire wondering whether it's time to get professional support, the best next step is a conversation. We'll look at where your business is now, where you want to take it, and what level of support makes sense — then give you a clear, fixed quote with no obligation. A chat costs nothing, and it often clears up more than you'd expect.
