Switching accountants

Switching accountants is easier than you think

Many business owners put off switching accountants because they assume that it will be complicated or disruptive. In practice, moving to a new accountant is a straightforward process and we handle most of it for you.

Signs that it might be time to switch

Slow responses, unclear fees, feeling like just another client or simply outgrowing what your current accountant offers are all common reasons that businesses decide to make a change. Especially with the introduction of Making Tax Digital, businesses may feel that their current accountant can no longer support their needs.

How the switch works

We contact your existing accountant on your behalf to request the professional handover information that we need. There is no need for an awkward conversation and there is no gap in your compliance whilst the move takes place.

What you need to do

Very little. Once you confirm that you would like to switch, we take care of the process and keep you updated at each stage so that you can stay focused on running your business.

Frequently asked questions

Will switching accountants cause a gap in my compliance?

No. We time the handover around your filing deadlines and pick up where your previous accountant left off, so your VAT returns, payroll filings and year-end accounts stay on schedule throughout.

Do I have to tell my current accountant myself?

No. Once you have appointed us, we write to your existing accountant for professional clearance and the handover records. Most people never need to have an awkward conversation about it.

When is the best time of year to switch accountants?

Any time works, but the cleanest point is just after your year-end accounts have been filed. That said, if things are not working, waiting for a tidy moment usually costs more than moving now.

What information does my old accountant have to hand over?

Professional clearance, your latest accounts and tax computations, payroll and VAT records, and the software access or backups needed to carry on. This is a normal professional courtesy and rarely causes any difficulty.
