Price Is Easy to Compare. What Matters Is Below the Surface

Linda · October 2026

Price is the easiest thing to compare. Which is precisely why it's often the wrong thing to compare.

Iceberg illustration: the fee sits above the surface while margins, cash flow, tax timing and risk sit below it

When a business owner asks me, 'How much do you charge?', I don't take offence.

It's a perfectly reasonable question. But it's rarely the most important one.

Because two accountants can quote almost identical fees and deliver completely different levels of value.

One makes sure your accounts are filed on time.

The other looks at your numbers throughout the year, spots what's changing, challenges what doesn't look right and helps you to make decisions before they become problems.

The difference isn't always visible in the quote.

It's visible when:

• Your gross margin has slipped by 2% over three months, but nobody has asked why.

• Your Corporation Tax and VAT liabilities fall due together, and nobody has helped you to plan for them.

• Your biggest customer has quietly stretched their payment terms from 30 to 60 days, putting pressure on your cash flow, and no-one has noticed.

• A cash shortfall is coming in three months, but you only discover it when there's not enough money in the bank.

None of these problems starts on the day it becomes a crisis. The warning signs were there.

The real question is whether anyone was paying attention.

Compliance matters. Of course it does. But compliance is the starting point, not the full value of the relationship.

What you're really paying for is experience, judgement, commercial understanding and, perhaps most importantly, knowing when to act.

A cheaper accountant isn't necessarily a worse accountant.

And a more expensive one isn't automatically better.

But choosing purely on price assumes you're buying the same thing.

You're not.

I'm always happy to explain my fees and exactly what's included. Transparency should be a given.

And if a business genuinely only needs basic compliance, that's absolutely fine.

But when you're turning over serious money, employing people and making decisions that affect your livelihood, the cost of advice that you didn't receive can far outweigh the fee you saved.

So perhaps the question isn't:

What will this accountant cost me?

It's:

What might it cost my business if nobody spots the problem until it's too late?

Because by then, the saving that you made on fees may be the least of your worries.
