Pain Points - Do These Sound Familiar?

Linda · 11 August 2026

Eight things that we hear from small business owners in Baildon and Shipley every week, from surprise tax bills to software that nobody explained and how we help to fix each one.

Is your business as profitable as it could be? Or are you just... busy?

Because those are two very different things and most business owners don't realise that there is a gap between them until it's too late.

Here are eight things that we hear from business owners every single week.

1. 'I'm always busy but I am not making any money'

You are looking at your bank balance, not your profit. They are rarely the same number.

How we help: We create a live profit picture that can change daily, not just a bank balance. We separate genuine profit from cash sitting in the account so you can see, in real numbers, whether the business itself is actually profitable, not just whether there is money in the bank today.

2. 'Why does money go out faster than it comes in?'

Money comes in, money goes out, but nobody knows where it is going each month.

How we help: Through proper bookkeeping and simple monthly reporting, we show you exactly where cash is leaking. That might be supplier costs, thin margins on certain jobs or spending that has crept up without you noticing.

3. 'I never know what my tax bill will be'

It lands as a shock every time, instead of something that you have planned and saved for.

How we help: We estimate and update your tax position every month throughout the year. Instead of one nasty surprise at year-end, you get a running figure each month so that you can set money aside as you go and never be caught out.

4. 'What if the cloud disappears?'

You have moved everything onto Xero, QuickBooks or Sage and it works, until you wonder what happens to your records if there is an outage, a lost login, a provider issue, or worse, hacking.

How we help: The cloud is still an unknown quantity for many long-established business owners and we always fear what we do not understand. We keep independent backups of your financial data, separate from any single software provider, so we always know that we can recreate your records. Nothing is truly gone forever.

5. 'I have the software but I can't understand what it is telling me'

Xero, QuickBooks, Sage. You bought it because someone told you to. Nobody showed you how to use it properly or how to read the information it gives you.

How we help: We translate your software into plain English. We sit down with you, virtually or in person, and explain what the numbers on the screen actually mean for your business. No jargon.

6. 'How do I get away from spreadsheets?'

Even small errors early on, especially during the move from spreadsheets to software, can cause severe disruption later. A badly constructed chart of accounts, miscoded transactions, missed reconciliations. They all quietly snowball.

How we help: We review how your accounts have been digitised, catch the errors and put a proper process in place so the same mistakes don't repeat and new ones don't creep in.

7. 'What on earth is Making Tax Digital?'

New rules, new deadlines and nobody has explained what it actually means for you.

How we help: We explain exactly what MTD means for your business, get you set up with the right software and processes and handle the ongoing digital record keeping and submissions, so that the deadlines, and the fines for missing them, are not on your plate.

8. 'Is all of this even worth the effort?'

Is this process, this tool, this way of working helping me and paying for itself?

How we help: We run a proper cost-benefit review of your current tools and processes so that you know whether what you are paying for, and spending time on, is genuinely earning its keep. If it needs to go, we tell you what to replace it with and where you could save.

If any of that sounds familiar, here is the real question: what is actually stopping you from fixing it?

Is it time? Money? People? Skill-set? Technology?

If nobody has ever shown you how to fix these issues, then how would you know?

We would love to show you what is really going on in your numbers and how to fix it. We work with small businesses across Baildon, Shipley and West Yorkshire, so get in touch and we can take a look together.
